Accès : Rd 16 (main street) à la base du pont. Même stationnement en hiver. Nombre limité de places : 5-7 voitures.

Le mont Hayes est le sommet le plus à l'ouest de la chaîne de montagnes Mahoosuc. Il domine Gorham, bordé des deux côtés par la rivière Androscoggin. Cette randonnée débute avec la traversée d'un pont sur cette rivière. La vue est magnifique.

On poursuit ensuite rapidement sur un large chemin forestier avant de rejoindre la Mahoosuc trail. Fidèle à sa réputation, ce sentier avec quelques traversées de ruisseaux sera boueux, accidenté et avec un dénivelé suffisant pour procurer un bon effort physique. On longe une magnifique cascade. Vous croiserez un embranchement vers la droite menant à Mascot Pond, un bel étang d'où l'on a une vue sur les montagnes. Un petit aller-retour rapide qui en vaut la peine. Derrière Mascot Pond se trouve un spectaculaire éboulis gravier qui tombe des falaises de Leadmine Ledge. De retour sur le Mahoosuc Trail, continuez l'ascension graduelle à travers une forêt de bouleaux dégagée, en traversant une ancienne route herbeuse. C'est à ce point que le sentier commence à monter de façon plus abrupte au travers de multiples rocheux et portions mouillées. L'ascension se fait principalement en ligne droite, avec peu de lacets. Au fil de l'ascension les feuillus font place aux conifères pendant les derniers 500 m. Le sentier s'aplanit ensuite quelque peu et un embranchement sur la droite mène à une belle corniche ouverte d'où vous aurez un magnifique panorama avec la ville de Gorham et la rivière Androscoggin contre-bas et la partie nord de la chaîne présidentielle (Adams, Madison et Washington) et de la chaîne Carter. .

Pour les peakbaggers, vous devrez revenir sur le sentier et poursuivre au-delà du point de vue pour aller rejoindre le sommet de Hayes qui est un cap rocheux boisé

Mount Hayes is the westernmost peak in the Mahoosuc mountain range. It dominates Gorham, bordered on two sides by the Androscoggin River. This hike begins with a bridge crossing over this river. The view is magnificent.

We then continue rapidly along a wide forest track before joining the Mahoosuc trail. True to its reputation, this trail, with a few stream crossings, will be muddy, rugged and with enough difference in altitude to provide a good physical effort. The trail skirts a magnificent waterfall. You'll come to a fork to the right leading to Mascot Pond, a beautiful pond with a view of the mountains. A quick round trip that's well worth it. Behind Mascot Pond is a spectacular gravel scree that falls from the cliffs of Leadmine Ledge. Back on the Mahoosuc Trail, continue the gradual ascent through open birch forest, crossing an old grassy road. At this point, the trail begins to climb more steeply through multiple rocky and wet sections. The ascent is mainly straight, with few switchbacks. As the climb progresses, deciduous trees give way to conifers for the last 500 m. The trail then flattens out a little and a fork to the right leads to a beautiful open ledge from which you'll have a magnificent panorama with the town of Gorham and the Androscoggin River below and the northern part of the Presidential Range (Adams, Madison and Washington) and the Carter Range. .

For peakbaggers, you'll need to return to the trail and continue beyond the viewpoint to reach Hayes summit, a rocky, wooded headland.
