Another Owl’s Head! There are at least three “Owl’s Heads” in the Adirondacks: one near Malone (this one), another near Long Lake, and the last one near Keene. There’s also a lookout point called “Owl’s Head Lookout.”
A leisurely hike away from the crowds. A rocky trail with no technical difficulty, sometimes muddy but easy to follow if you pay attention (especially in the fall when leaves cover the trail). The trail runs alongside a pond that’s barely visible due to the trees. The climb is gradual and becomes slightly steeper as you approach the summit. Be on the lookout—you can explore a cave (a magnetite mine; a hole about thirty feet deep) just before the summit. It’s located to the right of the trail just before it branches off to the left for the final ascent. Kids are sure to have a blast there. Bring your headlamps to make the rock sparkle, and a compass… the magnetite will throw off your sense of north!
At the summit lookout, you’ll enjoy views of a multitude of surrounding mountains, including Catamount, the village of Owl’s Head, and Mountain View Pond.
Combine this hike with Debar and Baldface for a full day out !
Have fun !
